On the other hand

I overheard a conversation between my friend and her son, discussing about her Instagram account.  The mother said: I don’t like this picture, this flower arrangement is not okay, but to my surprise, many people give “like” to it.  Then the son replied: on the other hand, which one do you like the most?  She pointed another picture.  Then the son said: how many people like it?  The mother mumbled: only one, the other are my friends, because I asked them to do so.

Amazing, I was stunned with that conversation.  Yes, we sometimes did not realize that the thing we like the most is different with others taste.  We always think that other people will have the same feeling with ours.  Children are usually like to ask: what if…?  They always say: on the other hand, on the contrary, etc.  My youngest son always asks those questions.  I think they are wise; they always try to see both sides of the story.  Maybe we should learn from children.

Sometimes we just overconfident that what we think is what others think too.  We believe that we are the trendsetter.  We are too stubborn to realize that other people have different perception.   This is not right, especially when you are in the business.  You may think that your product is excellent, while your customers may not think the same.  So, you better start to listen to other, especially your customers.  Try to test you market before you make decisions.

According to an expert:  “It’s okay to disagree with the thoughts or opinions expressed by other people.  That doesn’t give you the right to deny any sense they might make.  Nor does it give you a right to accuse someone of poorly expressing their beliefs just because you don’t like what they are saying.  Learn to recognize good writing when you read it, even if it means overcoming your pride and opening your mind beyond what is comfortable.”  (Ashly Lorenzana)

So, from now on, we better always ask ourselves those questions before making decisions.

Every truth has two sides; it is as well to look at both, before we commit ourselves to either.
